A fire hydrant has one job: deliver a large volume of water, immediately, under pressure, on the worst day a property will ever have. Most hydrant problems come from ordinary neglect rather than mechanical failure.
Landscaping, fencing, parked vehicles, dumpsters, and stacked material all interfere with access. Codes require clear space around a hydrant and an unobstructed approach for apparatus. A hydrant a crew has to fight through is a hydrant that costs minutes.
Grading changes, mulch beds, and regraded shoulders raise the ground around hydrants over time. Operating nuts and outlet caps must stay above grade and reachable, and the drain at the base must stay clear so the barrel can empty after use.
Hydrant color is not decoration. Bonnet and cap colors indicate available flow, which is how a responding crew chooses which hydrant to pull. Repainting a hydrant to match a building scheme removes information a firefighter needs.
Valves and stems seize when they are never operated. Hydrants should be opened, flowed, and closed on a routine schedule, with caps and gaskets checked and threads greased. A hydrant that will not open is functionally not there.
Standing water in a dry-barrel hydrant means the drain is clogged. Left alone through a freeze, the barrel cracks and the hydrant is out of service until it is replaced.
Hydrant maintenance is cheap, scheduled, and boring. That is exactly what makes it reliable.
