Existing conditions are the foundation of every civil design. Get the surface wrong and the earthwork quantities, the drainage, and the pad elevations are all wrong with it. Aerial mapping has changed how quickly and how accurately we can capture that surface.
A drone flies a programmed grid over the site, capturing overlapping images with known camera positions. Photogrammetry software resolves those overlaps into millions of three-dimensional points — a point cloud that describes the ground, the pavement, the stockpiles, and the structures as they actually are on the day of the flight.
Photogrammetry sees surfaces. On wooded ground it maps the canopy, not the earth beneath it. LiDAR pulses penetrate gaps in vegetation and return enough ground points to build a bare-earth model under tree cover, which is exactly where most of our sites need it.
The classified point cloud becomes a triangulated surface in Civil 3D. From there it drives contours, sections, corridor models, and cut-and-fill volumes directly. Design is performed against measured reality rather than an interpolation between widely spaced shots.
Ground control and conventional survey still set the datum and verify accuracy. The drone does not replace the surveyor — it multiplies what the surveyor can cover.
