Essential requirements for building sediment basins

A sediment basin is a temporary structure with one purpose: hold disturbed-site runoff long enough for suspended soil to settle out before the water leaves the property. It is the last line of defense in an erosion control plan, and it only works if it is sized and built correctly.

Size it to the drainage area

Storage volume is calculated from the area draining to the basin, typically expressed as a required volume per disturbed acre. Undersized basins fill with sediment, lose their settling depth, and pass turbid water straight through.

Give the water time and distance

Settling depends on residence time. A long, narrow basin with the inlet and outlet at opposite ends forces water to travel the full length. A short, wide basin short-circuits, and half the storage never participates.

Dewater from the surface

The clearest water in a basin is at the top. A floating skimmer draws from the surface and releases the stored volume slowly over a day or more, which is far more effective than a perforated riser drawing from the whole water column.

Build a real embankment and a real spillway

Compacted lifts, stable side slopes, and an emergency spillway sized for the design storm. The spillway and the outlet must be armored where flow leaves, or the basin becomes its own sediment source.

Maintain it or lose it

Inspect after every qualifying rainfall. Remove accumulated sediment when it reaches the cleanout elevation — commonly half the design depth. Repair the skimmer, the baffles, and the outlet protection promptly.

Basins are removed at final stabilization, and the footprint is graded and seeded. Until then they are the reason the creek downstream stays clear.
