You pass dozens of them a day and never think about what is underneath. A sanitary sewer manhole is an access point into a gravity network that moves wastewater across a whole city without a single pump in most stretches.
Below the cast iron cover sits a precast concrete structure, usually four feet in diameter, with steps or rungs down one wall. At the bottom is the invert — a shaped channel that carries flow from the incoming pipes to the outgoing one. The channel is formed so that flow does not slow down, drop, or splash, because turbulence is what releases odor and corrodes concrete.
Manholes are placed wherever the sewer changes direction, changes size, changes slope, or meets another line, and at regular intervals along straight runs so no length of pipe is beyond reach. They are the only way to inspect, clean, and camera a system that is otherwise buried and sealed.
A manhole is a permit-required confined space. Entry means atmospheric testing, ventilation, a retrieval harness, and an attendant at the surface. Nobody climbs down casually, and nobody should.
It is an unglamorous piece of infrastructure that quietly determines whether a development can be served at all.
